What is Geocaching?

Geocaching is an entertaining adventure game for GPS users. Participating in a cache hunt is not only a good way to utilize all the features and capabilities of a GPS unit but is also a great way to explore beautiful locales that might not otherwise be explored.

The basic idea is to have individuals and organizations set up caches all over the world and share the locations of these caches on the internet. GPS users can then use the location coordinates to find the caches. Once found, a cache may provide the visitor with a wide variety of rewards. All the visitor is asked to do is if they do uncover a treasure, they should try and leave something behind for the next cache.

Schuyler County is home to several geocaching sites. Caches are located in areas with striking views or areas that require a beautiful and fulfilling hike. Some may be more difficult to find than others but what could be more satisfying than spending time with friends and loved ones and having an adventure?! Especially when the adventure takes place in as beautiful a region as ours and you've may have never really explored.

Listed here are just a few hidden caches in Schuyler County (these are actually within 3 miles of Watkins Glen!!):

The Black Spot, The Ramshackle Chalet, Snapper or Fox?, Cody's Unimportant History Lesson, Spooky Tombstone, Enjoy the View, Bad Indian Swamp

Caches are located all over the world. They are on all seven continents, yes even Antarctica!! This is a great opportunity and a great "sport" to get involved in, as geocaching is growing in popularity. Geocaching gives you opportunities to explore the world, known and unknown lands, and take those trips you have always wanted!
