In December 1849 the Chemung Railroad, the rail corridor that paralleled the canal, had its first run from Elmira to Watkins Glen. The Trail was on its way to Sodus Bay on Lake Ontario. It was possible for a traveler from the Catharine Valley to reach New York City in 16 hours!
There were three railroads that serviced Schuyler County - The Elmira Railroad, the Jefferson Railroad and the Canandaigua Railroad.
Since being abandoned, the railway has now become the Catharine Valley Trail; a year-round compact stone-dust trail. It is still under construction, but when complete the trail will be 12 miles long connecting the villages of Watkins Glen and Horseheads. The trail has approximately 9 completed miles that spans from Seneca Harbor Park in Watkins Glen to the post office in the village of Millport.
This trail is great for hiking, biking, snow shoeing and cross-country skiing. Leashed dogs are also allowed on the trail. Along the trail you will find informational kiosks, as well as restrooms.
